| What is going on with the base stealing mechanic? I'm only in my 10th season, but I've never had an 18+ speed guy who could steal bases worth a lick. Yet, guys with 13-15 speed are often fairly resourceful stealing at a descent clip. Most of my 18-19 speed guys don't even try. I don't think base stealing is even tied to speed. Any theories on what it may be tied to? |

| Each player has some hidden traits. Base Stealing is the most well established of those. It has to do with things like getting a good lead, and having good base running instincts. Some fast guys have bad instincts. Some slightly slower guys have great instincts. I set all of my players to ++ for stealing when they are in the minors. It helps you see who is good, who is bad, and who is too wimpy to even try. Speed is an important stat, and you will get extra bases with good speed. But it doesn't equate to lots of stolen bases. To be a top base stealer they need both speed and instincts. Also, in the majors I don't set base stealing by speed. I ignore speed. Instead I set it based on their success rate (minors gives you a good starting point). If they get thrown out a lot, I ratchet it down. If they never get thrown out, I ratchet it up. I usually go for at least a 2/1 ratio of steals per caught stealing. Updated Monday, April 20 2026 @ 2:47:13 pm PDT |

| At the bottom of the Management page, click on "Spring Training". That shows the settings for your entire team. Only some of those settings are used for minor leagues. Base stealing aggressiveness is one setting that is definitely used. You will see a difference immediately. | ||

| Yes, I've got some interesting results from base stealing. 13 Speed? No problem: Todd steals bases for fun, Gallegos has success. 18 Speed? Wilkerson isn't having his best season in that regard but has been effective previously, Ponder has been either really good or really bad. 16 Speed might be the sweet spot! It might be everything Rock said (and his advice on setting your minors to ++ is spot on), and it might also be influenced by other things, including the fact I have a really good offensive manager and coaches. |
