| Are there any recommendations for which skills are most important for a pitcher? Howndo you compare them to determine which pitcherz are better? | ||

| That would be a matter of personal preference and philosophy. I'm not sure there is a "correct" answer. Personally, I like my guys to have a couple good tools (Vel, Cos, Mov) with at least one tool that is overwhelming. Then I also want good Control. Stamina is nice, but mostly important for Starters. Velocity - Will net you less hits and more Ks, but can give up a lot of HRs. I tend to avoid guys with high Velocity + low GB/FB. But there does seem to be a hidden trait related to HRs, and a few low GB/FB guys seem to avoid HRs. Change of Speed - This is the only skill you won't get a scouting report on, so you need to use player projections to see where it is likely going. I am less certain about the exact impact of CoS, but I assume it works best when paired with high velocity. Movement - Presumably makes the ball harder to hit, although guys tend to get smacked around if this is their only Tool. Maybe fewer "good" hits, like extra bases. Control - Prevents walks. I think this is particularly important for Movement guys, but really its important for all pitchers. I think Control is least important for high Velocity pitchers, as it might help reduce the number of meatballs they throw - but I still want pretty good control no matter what. I generally dump anyone with a negative Control comment, but I have had some minimal success with "below average" control guys with high velocity. Stamina - Is most important for Starting pitchers, although it will help all pitchers who are going to pitch more than 1 inning a game. It dictates how quickly their performance decreases during the game. Updated Monday, June 8 2026 @ 8:23:46 am PDT |

| For pitchers, I look at their stats first, skills second. If you drafted them, their minor league stats in a majority of the cases give a good indication, and looking at free agents, I look at their stats and what league level they got those stats. They could have really great stats from a lower league, but haven't been facing very good hitters. Pitchers are tough to figure out for me, because some of them seem to have great years followed by terrible years. I had one guy that looked like he was going to be great, and then he gained one point in velocity and suddenly became a home run machine. I watched his career and he actually got better again when he got old and his velocity started to drop. Looking at you Korey Nickerson |
