Broken Bat Baseball
Things are really heating up in the West division here in V.15

Walla Walla has fought back for a tie of the number one spot, but 4 teams are within one game of each other for the crown. If you're looking for a fun race to keep an eye on, this should be it!

Broken Bat Baseball
So I’m a bit out of practice on the whole preseason analysis thing, but I do still have the spreadsheet for it. I decided it was long overdue in dusting it off.

Bear in mind, this is strictly by-the-numbers and quick-n’-dirty analysis. It doesn’t look at pitcher usage, who’s played at what position, or take previous season stats into account. For entertainment purposes only, and all that.

 Before I start in:
» Description of a team as good or bad at a particular thing is in comparison to the league average of that particular aspect.
» The average hitting in this league is phenomenal. o.O;

————————————————————

 V . 1 5   W E S T

Rancho Santa Margarita Roadrunners
The Roadrunners are a generally slightly below average offensive team across the board, except for bat control. Their speed is nothing to sneeze at, though. The gloves and arms are solid enough in the field, but their range tops the West. Excellent change of speed and control are the high points of an otherwise mediocre pitching staff.

Prediction: 3rd — The defense isn’t enough to make this team a contender, but it will keep them out of VI.

Sioux City Catfish
The Catfish are actually a below average contact team, which is a terrifying proposition for V.15. Plate discipline and power are both somewhat above average, and their speed is close enough. They are slightly lacking defensively, compared to the rest of the division. The pitching, however, is superb, with league-leading command anchoring some of the better pitch tools in the division, if not the league.

Prediction: 2nd — They’ll contend, and if they make any offensive improvements, they have a very good chance.

Pasadena Owls
The Owls are also light on contact, comparatively speaking, but are also a patient and powerful team with speed on the base paths. Overall, this is the best offensive team in V.15. The offense will need to pick up a lot of slack for the pitching and sluggish defense. They may need it to overcome defensive blunders; their fielding and range are among the worst in the West. Armor up your hitters against their V.15-best fastballs, because they have the league’s worst command and movement.

Prediction: 5th — Unearned runs will send this team into a tailspin.

Littleton Genesiz
The Genesiz lead the league in hitting and plate discipline by a sizable margin, albeit at the expense of power. They’re also the slowest team in the West, which promises parades of singles and walks. The lack of speed translates to the most sluggish fielders in the West, but there’s nothing wrong with the gloves and their league-best arms are unwise to challenge. their velocity on the mound is poor, but they have a dizzying array of junkballs on offer with plenty of command to tie batters in knots.

Prediction: 1st — Consistent offense and strong pitching will be enough to overcome slow fielders.

Caldwell Foxes
The Foxes have good contact, but are otherwise significantly lacking on offensive capabilities. Even their speed is average at best. their only weakness in the field is their arms; their range is good and their fielding is by far the best V.15 has to offer. They’ll need it, as their pitching is overall the worst in the league. They have decent movement and fair control, but nothing else is even close to V.15’s average.

Prediction: 6th — The defense may surprise, but not nearly often enough to overcome offensive and pitching woes.

Carlsbad Ninjas
The Ninjas feature the league’s worst contact by far, but are above average everywhere else offensively. No team in the West is faster, and an aggressive running game is likely when they get on base. This translates to range in the field, though their fielding is the worst in the West — they’ll get to everything, but who knows where the ball goes from there! Their pitching is roughly average, with velocity and control being slightly above and below the league average, respectively.

Prediction: 4th — Inconsistent offense and defense are issues, but steady pitching should see them in V.7 next season.

 V . 1 5   E A S T

Cumberland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers are the lowest contact team in the East, which is a terrifying thought for East pitching and defense. They lack discipline, but have the division’s best bat control and power. Their speed is about average, but they have the best range in the East, and solid fielding and arms besides. Movement and change of speed are both the best in the division, and velocity and control are both above average.

Prediction: 1st — Simply put, this is the best team in the East, full stop.

Caribou Cubs
The Cubs a great contact team with unparalleled plate discipline, if only average power. They’re far and away the slowest team in V.15, however, and conservative baserunning will likely be the norm even against weak arms in the field. Their range is correspondingly poor, the worst in the East, and their arms follow suit, but their fielding leads the division comfortably. A notable oddity is that most of their pitching capabilties are a tick under the divisional average (the exception being East-best velocity), but they boast the division’s strongest overall pitching.

Prediction: 5th — …Or so say the numbers, but pitiful speed, range, and arm scores skew that; personally, I expect much better.

Eau Claire Kubbs
The Kubbs feature below average contact (which is still terrifying) but very patient at the plate, with above average bat control to go with it. They’re a bit short on speed, but should have enough to manufacture runs. Their fielding is average, their range less so, and arms open to be challenged. They have the best bendy stuff in the league and exceptional control, but the worst change of speed in V.15 to go along with it and average velocity at most.

Prediction: 4th — Their offense should produce enough that the subpar defense can be picked up by the pitching.

Apopka Rockets
The Rockets are a team with good contact and not much else, and will rely on that contact heavily by swinging at everything — they feature the league’s worst discipline. They are also well below the standard for bat control and power, but their excellent speed could play well to their approach at the plate. They have excellent gloves in the field but curiously average range. Their pitching is best described as “problematic”, with control being about average for the league and everything except their league-best stamina going downhill from there.

Prediction: 3rd — …Again, so say the numbers, but take away the stamina on the mound and their pitching doesn’t look as good on paper.

Boca Raton Gryphons
The Gryphons have good contact, but little else to go with it. They have the least pop in V.15, and their plate discipline is abysmal. Average speed won’t help much with baserunning, either. Their range is average for the East and arms among the best in the division, but their fielding is a train wreck. Though the lead the East in pitch command, there’s not a lot to use it with; their movement is good, but backed up with only average velocity and lackluster change of speed.

Prediction: 6th — With offense and defense like that, this team never makes it off the ground.

Prattville Black Cats
The Black Cats fall a bit short on contact (but see earlier comments about V.15) and lack discipline and power, but their bat control is notably above average. They are also the quickest team in V.7 by more than just a little; aggressive running and a small ball approach are likely tactics. Their range is surprisingly only just above average, but fielding is going to be a messy affair. Don’t be fooled by the poor velocity on the heaters, this is a magnificent junkball team, with the best movement in the East and excellent change of speed and command to enforce it.

Prediction: 2nd — A little more offense or defense and this team is pouncing on the Pennant.

————————————————————

Playoff prediction: Littleton in seven — The unrelenting and patient Genesiz offense will win the title in “death by a thousand cuts” fashion.

Thank you man! Appreciate the notes about my speed and our off-speed pitchers. I can’t explain why all my players seem to be so fast and BC oriented (I’m guessing that those guys are less valued than the power hitters, and thus I can get them more often off waivers), whereas lots of CoS and movement is easy to explain: I hate to allow home runs, and those types of guys do well at keeping the ball in the park, and so a guy like McGee fits in perfectly.

I’ve had an interesting pattern of sweep-swept-sweep for the first three series. That’d make for a weird .500 record at the end of the season. As for getting swept by the Black Cats? Not even mad. All three of those would have been great games to watch, if frustrating for the blown saves.

I think I ruined your predictions 2 Season ago, but I hope to follow them this season.

Level VI to level V is one of the bigger jumps in the game, even if Sammamish is making it look easy right now. Your team seems likely to end up at level II at this rate.

Apopka has a good relegation battle going, gonna be close! My team has been on a good run but I have a lot of geezers, so I am wondering how it's going to look a few seasons from now!

Not gonna lie: I'm rooting for Apopka in that race.

I have nothing against Cumberland, but it would offend my sense of justice if Apopka relegated despite having a massive lead in run differential. It's a 150 run spread between the teams right now!
